Venezuela's crisis: President Nicolas Mauro is
proposing to hold early elections this year
Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro on Saturday proposed the next parliamentary elections this year, instead of the 2020 deadline.
Maduro's proposal came in a speech to a rally of his supporters in Bolivar Square in the center of the Venezuelan capital of Caracas to mark the 20th anniversary of the Bolivarian revolution led by the late Hugo Chavez.
The march coincided with another march with the participation of thousands of opponents who demanded his departure and demonstrations in several Venezuelan cities called for the handover of power and the holding of new elections.
The demonstrations came at the invitation of Juan Guido, president of the National Assembly, who declared himself the interim president of the country.
Guido supporters, holding Venezuelan flags, gathered at five points east of the capital and then marched to the European Commission headquarters in the center of the capital chanting "Freedom and Freedom". They carried banners describing Maduro as a "murderer" and saying "Venezuelans are starving."
